Run, run, as fast as you can…


Are you a runner? Are you a runner who enjoys running? Because if you are, we need to be friends. Like, right now. I need you. And your encouragement! And wisdom!

Oh, and your recommendation of the best running shoe. This is currently what I’m rockin:

Hokay, so…I recently began training for a 5k. 4 weeks ago, to be exact. And so far, so good. Considering I have never really enjoyed running. But I want to. Very, very bad! So I set a goal to run a 5k.

I downloaded this app on my Android for $1.99 to train for it! And I wanted to share it with you so you could join in on the awesomeness!

It’s called “Couch-to-5k” by and it’s the stuff.

This app gives you all the tools you need to get ready for a 5k!

You can log your workouts, sync your music for a playlist, have a “personal trainer” keeping you on track, and if you want, you can track your distance with the GPS.

It’s set up to finish the training within just 9 weeks! And I’m stoked!

To start off every run, you begin with a 5 minute warm-up walk. Then you walk, jog, walk, jog…and continue alternating. Each week the walks get shorter and the runs get longer. Until eventually, you are running the entire 5k.

I’m already on week 4 day 2:

Brisk five-minute warm-up walk, then:

  • Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes)
  • Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes

And I have now begun looking for 5k races in my area. Woohoo!

So, like I said earlier, if you’re a runner and love it, let’s be super uber best friends, okay?! I can use all the encouragement and advice for running that I can get!

…and after finishing week 3, I have officially started to enjoy running! It gets easier every time…and then they up my minutes that I have to run. And I cry a little. But then that gets easier too. And then the minutes go up again…and you get the idea. I guess it will be that way until I run the 3.1 miles without stopping!

  2. I used the couch to 5K plan and it worked well for me. My only problem was I started training really earlier than I should have. I got bored with the plan and would choose to skip it because I figured oh the race is in 3 weeks I’ll be fine. But the race came up quick! My best advice is pick a time to run and just do it. Scheduling it into my planner really helped motivate me. And even though I don’t like running with my boyfriend he motivated me through competition! Somehow I was able to run the whole race, the race atmosphere is super motivating. Good Luck!

    I’m a runner! I dont run like 10 miles a day but I do run.
    Running used to be my absolute least favorite thing to do in the entire world. Seriously. Then my senior year of highschool i decided i wanted to be a part of a team and get in shape. Well i am not good at sports, so i chose cross country. Our races were 5Ks.
    It was hard at first, but I am SO glad I did it!!!! It’s now a part of my lifestyle and I feel so much healthier!
    On April 28th I ran my very first HALF MARATHON! WOOHOO!

  4. I am on week 3 of the C25K plan! I have found that even though it is hard to get my booty up and going, the 5k plan makes it super easy to follow because it’s not tooooo hard. Good luck!! Stay with it!

  5. I WAS training for a 5K and then I took a couple of weeks off..which is no good. I am getting back to it today….I feel like I will never get to my 3.1 miles somedays. But I am going to keep trying! Congrats on your progress!

  6. I’m at the very end of the Couch to 5k program myself! It’s been going great and I’m loving it. Tomorrow I’ll be running 2.5 miles. Not too bad. And shoes? I actually run in Vibrams.

  7. I used Couch to 5K when I got into running, too, and the app is amazing! At the beginning of the year I wasn’t running at all and my third 5K is at the end of the month :) (Also, hello from a new reader!)

  8. I’ve heard really good things about this app, but I never have used it myself. Just remember – any mile ran, no matter how slow, is better than time spent on the couch!

    I jumped right in with a 10k as my first race,and have 11 weeks left until my half marathon. I couldn’t run a mile straight when I started in March, but I am up to 10 right now, only 3.1 more to go.

    Just stick to it, make it part of your routine, and don’t forget to mix up your route to keep it interesting!
